Swim with African Penguins
Boulders Beach is famous for good reason. A colony of African penguins (also called jackass penguins for their braying call) has made this their home since the 1980s, and the resident birds are a reliable sight year-round.
The massive granite boulders that give the beach its name create sheltered pools with calm, crystal-clear water. Swimming here, you'll often see penguins porpoising through the waves nearby.
Arriving by boat allows you to observe the colony from the water before the crowds arrive. You'll see penguins porpoising through the waves, surfing the swells, and diving for fish. It's a different perspective from the land-based boardwalks.
